DON BROOK’S PRIVATE GARDEN
Land that had long ago been a farm was purchased by Don Brooks and Chris Syrjala in 1978. The ‘grounds’ consisted of several old fruit trees, a couple of shrubs and a mix of raspberries and wild blackberries. Little remains of that early landscape! With 30 years as head gardener at Seattle’s Kubota Garden, there are few plant groups that have escaped Don’s botanic interests from maples, conifers, and ferns, to species rhododendrons. All these, plus stone and water are found throughout his garden. Unexpected surprises include what Don calls “miscellaneous curiosities”. He has named the theme of his garden: the “Collectors-Cramscaped Approach”! Don, a HFF board member, looks forward to sharing his passion for a deep and wide variety of cultivated treasures.
MILLIE LIVINGSTON’S PRIVATE GARDEN
Undaunted by a steeply sloped hillside, Millie has devoted decades to realizing her garden vision. An extensive network of paths, staircases, retaining walls, terraces, and a bridge using wood, stone, and metal tame her steep ravine. This nearly 2 acre woodland garden of ferns, hardy fuchsia, hellebores, trillium, hostas, ligularia and brunnera thrive on their shady hillside perch. Deciduous azaleas and many varieties of hydrangeas, including velvety-leafed Hydrangea aspera, add color and texture. Millie’s award winning 500 square foot vegetable garden, built using artist made intricately patterned pavers, is both beautiful and productive. The grand result: A Northwest garden masterpiece!
DUNN GARDENS
Tucked away in North Seattle’s Broadview neighborhood, the Dunn Gardens are recognized as “a historic treasure in the city of Seattle.” Designed in 1915 by the renowned Olmsted Brothers who designed Seattle’s major public parks, the Dunn Gardens are more than their history. They are continually evolving over time and with each season. Mighty conifers and large deciduous trees add stature. Broad lawns provide spacious viewing of large rhododendrons, rich and diverse woodland gardens and drifts of spring bloomers like trillium and erythronium. HFF Board member, Chuck Ogburn, will lead our tour with knowledge that comes from years of volunteering his time to Dunn Gardens’ Board and their many garden activities
