Ferns in the Landscape: Bainbridge Island Garden Tour

The tour begins at the Bainbridge Public Library. Visitors will view three enchanting gardens: the Haiku Japanese Garden, the Mixed Perennial Garden and the Fern Display Garden.
Then, the tour will move to the lovely garden of tour leader, John van den Meerendonk. Please bring a picnic lunch. Guests may relax and enjoy each other’s’ company while they walk the beach, stroll through the small and beautifully curated garden, or visit the nature preserve 800ft. down the beach.
Lastly, the tour will head to the stunning Bloedel Reserve where John will lead a guided tour. Seven gardens are featured within the surrounding forest. They include meadows, wetlands, a Japanese garden, formal gardens, a woodland garden, a moss garden and the reflecting pool.
Host and Guide
John van den Meerendonk is a landscape/garden designer, horticulturist, and philanthropist, as well as a charter member and past president of the International Hardy Fern Foundation. John has planned and designed specialized gardens for many of the most iconic gardens in the Puget Sound, including Heronswood Gardens, the Signature Fern Garden at the UW Arboretum, the Stumpery at the Rhododendron species garden, the Bainbridge Island Library and the Bloedel Reserve where he was Director of Horticulture and Grounds from 1985-1990. John is a gifted speaker and leads educational seminars and tours.
