Have you ever wondered how much cold these so-called “hardy” ferns can really take?  Find out from research conducted in northern Wisconsin, now Zone 4a.

Michael Heim is a retired faculty member of a tribal university, where he taught courses in the natural sciences and was the Agriculture & Natural Resources Degree Program advisor.  He has a long-time interest in plant ecology, biogeography, paleobotany, and the biology of adventive species as well as that of relict plants.  His home is located on a kettle moraine where he studies Nature and gardens, experimentally attempting to grow all sorts of hardy plants, from kiwifruit to cacti.  He has a special fondness for ferns, ever since as a child when his family collected fern fossils in the Illinois coal mines.
