Enjoy a fun day on Vashon Island exploring the privately owned fern stumpery of the Riehl family, two sweeping Northwest gardens and the whimsical Vashon Troll.
The tour starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Riehl Stumpery. Please pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at Froggsong Garden. After lunch, the tour continues on to the Carhart garden and ends with the last stop at Point Robinson Park.
The Riehl Stumpery
This legendary garden was the creation of former HFF board member, the late Pat Riehl. Inspired by stumperies in the UK Pat created an enormous stumpery on Vashon Island with the help of her husband Walt Riehl and her good friend noted ferns expert and stumpery creator, Martin Rickard. Over one hundred stumps are artistically placed in a shaded ravine. The area is filled with an impressive collection of ferns as well as complimenting shade plants. It is a rare treat to visit this garden, and we are grateful for Walt’s generosity and continued support of the Hardy Fern Foundation.
Froggsong Garden
This stunning five-acre estate garden created by Steve and Cindy Stockett is a blend of formal and informal design. A rose pergola, roundel garden, parterre garden, a stone “ruin”, and a knot garden share a space that frames and defines the senses. The “Queens Garden” features arches of repeating hornbeams, while the “Earth Works” garden consists of a passageway, cairns, a wind garden and a labyrinth. The garden has been featured in numerous magazines from Sunset to Fine Gardening, Better Homes and Gardens and the Pacific Northwest Magazine.
Whit and Mary Carhart’s Garden
This four season 2.5-acre garden features a diverse collection of plants, including unusual and rare woodland plants and ferns set among Japanese maples, species Rhododendrons and conifers. Winding paths afford an opportunity to pause and reflect among the naturalistic plantings of cedars, firs, Stewartias, hydrangeas and shade tolerant perennials. The garden features a waterfall and pond, an antique Indonesian garden shed and the sculptural art of Washington state and international artists.
The Vashon Troll and Point Robinson Lighthouse
Begin at the top of Point Robinson Park to revel in the giant troll sculpture, Oscar the Bird King, created by Thomas Danbo. Then take a short stroll down through the woods to end at the beach to see the lighthouse and look back at Seattle across the Puget Sound.
