Description

This easy to grow evergreen to semi evergreen fern with once pinnate blades are lanceolate that mature to a darker green. New fronds appear in spring with stipes covered in black hair like scales that are on a short creeping rhizome. D. cycadina is a vase shaped fern with stiff leathery fronds that have a slight arch. Lower pinnae point downward and forward. Although evergreen, fronds will collapse to the ground in early winter. It likes moist to regular watering in humus rich soil with good drainage. Plant in part sun to deep shade and protect from the wind. Trim back fronds in late winter to early spring. Sori are adjacent to the dark midribs in irregular rows. Propagation by dividing in spring or by spore. Epithet means like a cycad.
