In the spring of 2024, Atsuko traveled to Yakushima, a lush island in southern Japan and the natural home of Rhododendron degronianum ssp. yakushimanum, affectionately known as “yaks.” Long days of trekking were rewarded with breathtaking views of yaks in full bloom at elevations near 6,000 feet, along with encounters with a remarkable diversity of ferns along the way. Through a photographic journey, Atsuko will share the beauty, diversity, and wild spirit of Yakushima and its majestic natural landscapes.
