Heronswood Garden

Longtime Heronswood volunteer and gifted speaker on landscape design and horticulture, John van den Meerendonk, will lead the group through the Heronswood Garden. It features six distinctive and beautiful landscapes, each with a special focus – Renaissance Garden, Rock Garden, Woodland Garden, Traveler’s Garden, Heron House & Formal Gardens and the S’Klallam Connections Garden. A beautiful and immense fern table nestled amongst mossy logs is not to be missed!

The Heronswood Garden, owned by the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, seeks to inspire the community with its plant collections and charismatic landscapes, to educate them on the connections between plants and people, to encourage them to protect plants and their natural habitats, and to appreciate the great diversity of plants and the people who care for them. Heronswood celebrates the diversity of cultures in the Pacific Northwest while showcasing the magic and majesty of botanical treasures from around the world.

John van den Meerendonk is a landscape/garden designer, horticulturist, and philanthropist, as well as a charter member and past president of the International Hardy Fern Foundation. John has planned and designed specialized gardens for many of the most iconic gardens in the Puget Sound, including Heronswood Gardens, the Signature Fern Garden at the UW Arboretum, the Stumpery at the Rhododendron species garden, the Bainbridge Island Library and the Bloedel Reserve where he was Director of Horticulture and Grounds from 1985-1990.  John is a gifted speaker and leads educational seminars and tours. He is also a longtime volunteer at Heronswood Garden.
