A Tropical Rainforest Garden for a Temperate Climate with Remko Beuving

January 15th, 2022 – 10:00am (PST), 6:00pm (GMT)

Join Remko Beuving, of the Dutch Fern Society, as he gives us a tour of his growing garden. Starting from nothing, Remko has taken his experiences from previous gardens, the many magnificent gardens he has visited all over Europe, and the natural habitats he’s travelled to, and used them as inspiration for the space he started cultivating in 2011. In just a decade, his garden has exploded into the lush rainforest it is today.

Remko’s main horticultural interests are ferns, Musa, and Aristolochia, along with many rare and unusual plants that may look tropical but are generally able to survive his zone 7b/8a winters without much protection. Collecting these plants has brought him all over Europe, especially the United Kingdom, and later, parts of Asia, including China, India, Nepal, and Taiwan. While there will be many ferns to see in his garden, there are also many broadleaved evergreen woody plants, as well as some palms, bananas, and climbing liana.

A bit of background from Remko:  “I am a chemist by profession, although in recent years I feel I should follow my heart and do something more related to nature in my daily life; let’s see what will happen! Born and raised in Eindhoven, the South of the Netherlands, my parents and grandparents always taught me about nature, and inspired me in that area. They gave me full freedom to explore my interests (that were many) and this gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about nature, and of course gardening!”

This Zoom lecture is a free benefit for members of the Hardy Fern Foundation and the British Pteridological Society, but registration is required. A recording of the webinar will be available to those who register for two weeks after the webinar date.
