Texas has the largest diversity of Pteridophytes in the continental US. The large size and diverse range of habitats allow for hardy to sub-tropical ferns to be found within its boarders as well as dry land to bog loving ferns. Darla Harris has a great love for ferns, especially Texan native ferns. Join us for an entertaining talk in exploring the ferns of Texas.
Darla Harris is currently the President of the Texas Gulf Coast Fern Society of which she was one of the founding members in 1998. She has held several positions in the society over the years including several years as President. She is also a member of the American Fern Society, Los Angeles International Fern Society, the Tropical Fern & Exotic Plant Society, and the Hardy Fern Foundation. Serves as content editior for the American Fern Society’s newsletter.
As an avid grower of ferns for over 35 years, Darla has collected more than 500 different varieties. She enjoys the challenge of growing both tropical and hardy ferns in the Houston area climate but her passion is learning how the ferns grow in nature and then attempting to duplicate this environment.
Darla latest accomplishment is to open her fern nursery, Fern Plantation Nursery with over 200 different ferns and adding more all the time. The largest retail fern nursery in the Houston area with over 15,000 sq ft of greenhouse space and growing.
