Fern Study Day at Heronswood with the Hardy Fern Foundation

Join us for an inspiring and information-packed day at Heronswood as we dive into the wonderful world of ferns through this special collaboration between the Hardy Fern Foundation and Heronswood.

Come learn the basics of fern identification, selection, and tips on some of the best species to use in your garden beds or containers. You’ll have an opportunity to explore the grounds of Heronswood (a HFF affiliate garden) and purchase plants from both the HFF and Dan Hinkley’s Windcliff Garden. 2 hour class includes a lecture by noted fern expert and horticulturist John van den Meerendonk, followed by a tour and plant ID activity.

All in-person classes are limited to 25 attendees. A significant portion of this class is held outside, so attendees should dress appropriately. Classes may be rescheduled in the event of bad weather.

About John van den Meerendonk

John van den Meerendonk is the former Director of Horticulture and Grounds at the Bloedel Reserve.

He is an expert in the field of fern identification, care and garden design. John designed the signature fern gardens at the Bainbridge Library, University of Washington Arboretum, the Bellevue Botanical Garden and the Stumpery at the Rhododendron Species Garden, among many others.
