Opened in 2018, the Spheres’ first plant resident was an Australian tree fern, Cyathea australis. Now home to more than 40,000 plants from the cloud forest regions of over 30 countries, the Spheres are a result of innovative thinking about the character of a workplace and an extended conversation about what is typically missing from urban offices– a direct link to nature.
The Spheres‘ living walls showcase more than 25,000 plants and are an innovative demonstration of biodiversity. They boast more than 200 different species of continuous plant coverage. Like most of The Spheres’ plants, the living walls highlight flora from the world’s cloud forests. Like natural cloud forests, the living walls demonstrate vertical stratification. In designing the wall’s plant palate, the horticulture team considered this. The base of the walls features plants that prefer lower light levels, cooler temperatures, and more water—plants found here include many ferns, cool growing orchids, and aroids.
